Hunting Keyboards with Bon Jovi's David Bryan

After enjoying a Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band performance, Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan walked backstage to meet E-Street Band keyboardist Danny Federici and discuss his impressive setup. It was not long before Bryan was writing down Dawk's phone number.

"David hired me to secure and set up equipment similar to Danny's Hammond B-3 keyboard and Leslie cabinet," recalls Dawk. "At the time I had no idea who David was. Bon Jovi had just finished touring in support of its debut. So I flew to New Jersey and, after dinner with the band at drummer Tico Torres's house, began the arduous task of finding the equipment. After searching throughout New Jersey, I came across a beautiful Hammond C-3 keyboard in a music shop. Unfortunately the instrument had just been sold to a local church. The church had put a down payment on the instrument, but left it in layaway while additional payments were made over a six-month period. And payments had lapsed.

"Ironically, David knew the church's reverend, who was this fire and brimstone-type. David and I went back to the store, looked around and found an older keyboard in the storage room. He decided that he was going to buy both keyboards. The plan was that I would fix the older keyboard, which he would then give to the church. He would also buy the Hammond C-3 from the church. David, the church and the music shop owner all came out smiling.

"Finding a model 122 Leslie cabinet that was in good shape also proved difficult. Eventually, I built David a cabinet from Leslie parts. During our shopping spree we also bought a 1959 model Marshall amplifier and a 1960/B cabinet that he had me set up to resemble Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord's."
